On 23rd October, Alys Fowler will be taking a fresh look at foraging, encouraging you to look closer to home, from the weeds in your garden to the trees in your street, rather than the fields and hedgerows of the countryside.
Birch C of E Primary School, winners of the Edible Essex Packed Lunch Plot Competition, spent a day filming with BBC Countryfile last Friday. Matt Baker, one of the show’s presenters, met Emily Lawrence, the year 6 pupil who designed the winning entry, and helped to make her Summer Sunshine Pasta Salad and Lavender Cup Cakes. The whole school then enjoyed eating them!
On 6th June 2013, Edible Essex took part in the sixth ‘Essex Schools Food and Farming Day’ at Writtle College.
35 children from Birch Primary school enjoyed planting the plot and packing the lunch of the Packed Lunch Plot Competition’s winning entry.
On Friday 12th April,the Chignals and Mashbury Jubilee Community Orchard was officially opened. Local residents and children joined in with the tree planting and were able to label their own trees.

Edible Essex invited television presenter James Wong to Writtle College on 15th November to give an engaging talk about edible plant species in Essex that we can all grow in our back gardens.
For National Tree Week, pupils from St Peter’s RC Primary School in Billericay, have been helping to plant an orchard at Barleylands. Twenty four apple trees of different varieties were supplied by Edible Essex, a project managed by the Rural Community Council of Essex, and planted by six members of the school’s Gardening Club.
